Did you know that a woman is more than twice as likely to experience depression as a man? Maybe you are just feeling blue, or maybe you are depressed. The key to dealing with depression is learning how to recognize the causes, signs, and treatment options.
Everyone feels sad from time to time, that's just a normal reaction to life. Bad things happen to us or to the people we love and we are saddened, that's normal. Depression however is a serious problem and not be ignored. Depression in women is frequently different than depression in men. Depression in women is frequently cause by different factors than depression in women.
Women also experience depression differently and may exhibit different signs that they are depressed than men. Of course women have to deal with hormone fluctuations that men don't have to deal with so that is going to be a difference to begin with. But women also react to the stresses of everyday life differently than men do, and this can result in differences in how depression is experienced and exhibited.
Some of the signs that a man or a woman may be depressed are seen on both men and women. The difference is that women will likely exhibit certain signs of depression more commonly than men. Although many people aren't aware of it but people can often be depressed or show signs of depression because they are sensitive to changes in the amount of sunlight they get. This is frequently referred to as a seasonal disorder. Women are much more susceptible to feeling blue due to the reduced amount of sunlight they get, particularly in the winter months.
Women also experience the type of symptoms that men experience - but in reverse. When a man is depressed he may have difficulty eating and sleeping and frequently may lose weight. With women it can be just the opposite, they sleep more, eat more, and gain weight, which of course may worsen the depression because it can affect their self esteem.
Depression is a serious problem for men and women. The secret is to educate yourself about the problem, learn to recognize the symptoms and when it's time to seek professional help.
